Border Not Border
지역과 지역, 국가와 국가를 나누는 기준은 엄밀히 말해 공간과 공간이 물리적으로 충돌하는 지점이다. 강물과 산맥 같은 입체적인 실체가 그 경계가 된다. 하지만 3차원의 현실이 2차원의 지도로 변환될 때, 이 부피감 있는 경계들은 모두 소거되고 납작한 ‘선(Line)’ 하나만이 남는다.
나는 우크라이나 전쟁 당시 위성 지도 위에 그어진 전선의 궤적을 보며 기이함을 느꼈다. 현실 세계에서는 찾아볼 수 없는, 오직 2차원 세상에서만 작동하는 그 얇은 실선이 땅을 가르고 생사를 결정짓고 있었다. 소거된 실체를 대신해 그어진 그 선은 논쟁과 갈등의 상징이었다.
작업 <Border not Border>는 지도 밖으로, 혹은 현실의 틈새로 이 인위적인 선을 소환한다. 칠흑 같은 어둠(검은 배경) 속에서 하나의 선은 끊임없이 움직이며 엉키고, 복잡한 형태를 띠며 공간을 횡단한다. 면과 면이 만나 입체를 이루는 현실의 꼭짓점과는 달리, 이 선은 오로지 자신만의 논리로 부유하며 가변적인 경계를 그린다.
격렬하게 뒤엉키던 선은 다시 하나의 가느다란 선으로, 마침내 하나의 점으로 수렴하여 소멸한다. 생성과 팽창, 그리고 무(無)로 돌아가는 이 수미상관의 구조 속에서 나는 묻는다. 현실에는 존재하지 않으나 우리를 끊임없이 규정짓는 저 선의 실체는 과연 무엇인가.
Border Not Border
Strictly speaking, the criteria dividing regions and nations are the points where space and space physically collide. Three-dimensional entities like rivers and mountain ranges become those boundaries. However, when 3D reality is converted into a 2D map, these voluminous boundaries are all eliminated, leaving only a single flat ‘Line.’
I felt a sense of strangeness watching the trajectory of the front line drawn on satellite maps during the Ukraine war. That thin solid line, which could not be found in the real world and operated only in a 2D world, was dividing the land and deciding life and death. The line drawn in place of the eliminated reality was a symbol of controversy and conflict.
The work Border not Border summons this artificial line outside the map, or into the cracks of reality. Inside pitch-black darkness (black background), a single line moves endlessly, tangling, taking on complex forms, and traversing space. Unlike the vertices of reality where planes meet to form volumes, this line floats solely by its own logic, drawing variable boundaries.
The violently tangling line converges back into a single thin line, and finally into a single dot, disappearing. In this structure of beginning and end—creation, expansion, and return to nothingness—I ask: What is the true nature of that line, which does not exist in reality but constantly defines us?
